Once more as innocent victims see millions wasted on Inquiries to placate the Nationalist/Republican community it is sickening to see that when after getting their way and after millions of pounds of taxpayers money being wasted the same individuals and parties which called for an inquiry now turn on it when they do not like the evidence that is submitted.
In the course of the Saville Inquiry it became clear that Martin McGuiness played a leading role in PIRA terrorism in Londonderry at that time. It also became clear that the PIRA used the cover of such marches to attack the police and army and had fired shots at the army on the day in question. Therefore the truth exposed by that inquiry placed McGuiness on the spot and his reaction was denial and refusal to participate and give an account of himself.
Next we had Pat Finucane where the same chorus of truth seekers feel strangely silent when we challenged them to support a full inquiry into the man and his actions. The threat to expose his role in the PIRA alongside his brothers, and his abuse of his position as a lawyer to assist the PIRA legally and financially has led to Republicans engaging in ever more fanciful conspiracy theories about collusion to cover the real truth about Finucane.
Now in terms of Rosemary Nelson we see a police officer who had intimate knowledge of the case and the person on Mrs Nelson giving evidence under oath which stated that she passed confidential case information to IRA members, and that Special Branch has information that Mrs Nelson had been having an affair with Colin Duffy, described as a prominent IRA member.
The officer clearly provides a balanced assessment based on his definition of a terrorist as someone who is engaged in bombing or violence. In terms of that definition he concludes that he would not have considered Mrs Nelson a terrorist, however, he described her as “certainly assisting terrorists in the area”. We however would have a more robust definition of a terrorist and indeed the actions he describes are now clearly defined as illegal under present Terrorism Legislation.
Therefore using his evidence we can only conclude that she was involved in terrorist activity. Like Pat Finucane she abused her legal position and her access to suspects. Her relations with Colin Duffy based on Special Branch intelligence that the two had met in a discreet location called Demesne Avenue, which was described as a loyalist area.
Once more we see that when a figure whose involvement with Republican terrorism has been exposed the wheels of Republican propaganda begin to spin in order to cover the truth. This show just how little they think about the truth as something that they can pick up and wield then cast aside when it no longer furthers their agenda.
